Frequently asked questions

Niho Ora ki Manukau (Oral Health Manukau) is specifically designed to foster excellent care and educational excellence.

Treatment is administered by students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Science (Oral Health) at AUT under the close supervision of qualified dental professionals. Students provide treatment, ensuring a standard of care equivalent to that of fully qualified oral health practitioners.

Appointments at Niho Ora ki Manukau typically allow for more time compared to private general oral health practices.

The duration of your first appointment at the oral health clinic typically ranges from 60 to 90 minutes. However, this time may vary depending on the assessment of your dental condition, the necessary procedures and any unforeseen complications that may arise.

Following the initial consultation, a personalised treatment plan will be created to address your specific needs, along with a cost estimate.

During your dental visit, we might need to take some radiographs (x-rays) to get a closer look at your teeth and their surrounding structures. It is a painless procedure that helps us understand your oral health better.

First, we'll have you bite down on a small plastic or cardboard frame that holds a digital sensor. This helps us get clear images of your teeth. Then, we will position an x-ray machine close to your cheek and turn it on. The machine sends x-rays towards the film or sensor in your mouth, capturing detailed pictures instantly to display on our computer screens.

There are a few types of radiographs we might take:

Periapical imaging

This helps us see detailed images of individual teeth and their supporting structures. We often use this when we're checking specific dental issues.

Bitewing imaging

This type gives us a good view of your upper and lower molars, helping us detect cavities between teeth and keep an eye on bone density changes.

Panoramic imaging

This gives us a big picture of your whole mouth – teeth, jaws and sinuses. It's great for overall dental health evaluation, finding hidden teeth, checking bone levels for periodontal disease, and checking for other conditions.

We use the latest technology with digital impressions that involve using 3D scanning technology to create accurate images of your teeth and gums. With intraoral scanning, these digital replicas are displayed directly on a computer or tablet screen.

Digital dental impressions are gaining popularity in dental clinics across New Zealand, offering a quicker and more comfortable experience compared to traditional methods.

The cost of your treatment is determined by the assessment of your oral health, including any identified issues or problems. Following the initial consultation, you will be provided with an estimate for the treatment expenses.
